The Waves of Hope Sri Lanka implemented a Coral Reef Restoration program in Mirissa on 04th of April 2026 , reinforcing an integrated “shore-to-sea” conservation approach.

The SOMag Society of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science & Technology, University of Ruhuna, were proud to join this initiative and extended their fullest support through our expertise and hands-on experience in marine conservation.

Coral reef restoration is a critical conservation intervention aimed at reversing the progressive degradation of reef ecosystems caused by climate change, marine pollution, destructive fishing practices, and unregulated coastal development. Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet, providing essential habitat for marine species, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges, and sustaining coastal livelihoods through fisheries and tourism. When reef systems are damaged, their natural regenerative capacity is often limited or disrupted, making active, science-based restoration interventions essential to re-establish ecological balance and resilience.

This meaningful effort not only contributed to the restoration of coral reef ecosystems, but also served as a valuable platform to strengthen partnerships between academia, the corporate sector, and volunteer organizations. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also gave a tremendous support for the success of this event.
